He was profoundly obsessed with light, and many of his paintings have a luminous quality including the most famous one “Girl with a Pearl Earring” (1665). The painting inspired Tracy Chevalier to write a novel “Girl with a Pearl Earring” in 1999, following with a movie adaptation of the book. The painting “Girl with a Pearl Earring” has been a source of imagination for millions of people who had a chance to see the painting. Who is she? Is she turning towards us or away from us? Only Vermeer could answer these questions. The painting is often referred to as Mona Lisa of the North.
Vermeer was successful in Delft, but during his life, he was not well-known outside of his small community. Today, he is admired around the globe, although he left only 36 paintings behind.
Now his paintings are worth of fortune, but at his final years of life Vermeer struggled financially. He was in debt at the time of his death.
Johannes Vermeer died on December 16, 1675.
